The Rains Have Come

February and March have seen the best rains at Arkaba and in the Flinders Ranges for many many years.  The sustenance this brings to native flora and fauna is life giving, the excitement it brings to the team at Arkaba is tangible and irrepressible.

The stories and photos of these rains give a sense of the change in the country

Challenges & Taking Advantage of the Rains

The rains bring huge benefits to the country - they also bring challenges and opportunities.  While 15 years of soil and landscape regeneration at Arkaba mean that much of the water will be taken into the soil for longer term biodiversity recovery rather than running off the land and carrying the remnants of top soil with it, active stewardship of the country is needed to translate these events into lasting ecological recovery.  Future droughts will otherwise find the landscape less well prepared for the next dry cycle, perpetuating an endless downward spiral.
