Springs

In the local language, Arkaba means 'Place of Hidden Water' and Arkaba's springs were one of the immediate beneficiaries of destocking the country of sheep.  The reappearance of standing, clear water and native sedges are testimony to the resilience of these systems when given the chance.  Springs are an essential indicator of environmental health and the subject of triannual surveys at Arkaba, using an Index of Riparian Spring Condition to assess their condition - these surveys are supported by Arkaba Environmental Projects.

Strategies

Our primary strategy to improve the condition of springs at Arkaba Conservancy is in controlling the grazing species that impact them the most - in the absence of sheep at Arkaba this is primarily goats.  With the support of Parks, Conservation Wildlife Management South Australia and the team at Wild Bush Luxury, goat numbers are controlled in what is an eternal exercise in land management.

Arkaba Environmental Projects supports the engagement of a consultant ecologist to assess the condition of springs at Arkaba Conservancy every three years.
